The mountain and its villages

    The  itinerary will touch the highest peaks of the Aspromonte and the ancient villages of both the Grecanic and the Tyrrhenian area. It’s designed for mountain walks enthusiasts who like to venture towards higher altitudes but also for those who are interested in the history and legends of the Aspromonte. A tour full of breathtaking landscapes through mountains, waterfalls, rivers and the silence of ancient uninhabited villages. Visit the main centres of the Grecanic area such as the ghost town of Pentadattilo; discover the ancient traditions of this land between the artisan workshops of Locri and Gerace; taste the dishes prepared with bergamot, a precious citrus fruit with a bitter taste and inebriating perfume. Follow the steep steps and the alleys of Chianalea di Scilla, one of the most authentic seaside villages of the Tyrrhenian coast.

    Itinerary

    Scilla e Chianalea

    Arrival in Reggio Calabria in the morning, welcoming and transfer to Scilla to visit the small village overlooking the Strait of Messina. Scylla, a mythological six-headed sea monster, which together with the Sicilian Charybdis terrified those who sailed the sea that separates Calabria and Sicily, today it is one of the most popular beaches in the province of Reggio. We will visit the district of San Giorgio, the panoramic Piazza San Rocco that overlooks the beach of the Sirens, the Ruffo di Calabria Castle and the Aeolian Islands. Arrival in Chianalea, a cliffside fishing quarter whose narrow alleys lead you to the sea, and once at the port admire the felucca, a traditional boat used for swordfish fishing. In the afternoon transfer to your  accommodation in a farmhouse in Amendolea on the Ionian coast. Dinner and overnight stay at the farmhouse.

    Escursione a Monte Fistocchio

    Excursion to Monte Fistocchio

    Excursion. Set out on foot from the rifugio  to the top of Monte Fistocchio take in the spectacular view of the Aspromonte mountain range, the Ionian side and the Tyrrhenian side, as well as the other peaks and look out for Montalto the one that dominates over all of them. The presence of large, square boulders on the top of the mountain, is evidence of an ancient military post, a very strategic place to guard the ancient ways of communication. Later, from Puntone la Croce enjoy the panoramic view of the Bonamico river and the valley of the Madonna, named after the local sanctuary of the Madonna della Montagna.  Continue the excusion to return to the rifugio on foot.

    Escursione a Montalto

    Excursion to Montalto

    Set off on foot from the rifugio for the excursion to Montalto (1956 m), the highest peak of the Aspromonte, covered by rich vegetation of beech and silver fir forests. It is interesting to note the different morphology of the trees due to wind and snow.  Rising in altitude, they change from being tall and columnar to being twisted and spindly just below the summit. Once you reach the summit the view is unique and evocative: Admire the Strait of Messina, Mount Etna, the Aeolian Islands and the southern end of the Apennine ridge. Duration: 7 hours.

    Gerace e Locri

    Gerace and Locri

    The day is dedicated to exploring culture and history. Starting with a guided tour of Gerace, which was awarded the “Bandiera Arancione” and is listed in "I borghi più belli d'Italia" National Association. The town, located within the Aspromonte National Park, retains its medieval setting and charm with plenty of churches, old buildings and small houses carved directly into the rock, which are used today by local artisans. Lunch in a restaurant and subsequently transfer to Locri Epizefiri the last of the Greek colonies built in Calabria.  Archaeological remains are visible thanks to excavations carried out since the early 1900s which have almost completely revealed the "dromo" of the ancient city, city walls, temples, the theater and the necropolis. In the evening transfer to Reggio Calabria. Dinner and overnight stay in the hotel.

    Escursione a Pietra Cappa e la vallata delle grandi pietre

    Excursion to Pietra Cappa and the valley of the great rocks

    Transfer by bus to Natile Vecchio, a mountain village in the Aspromonte National Park where the trail leading to Pietra Cappa begins. The Valley of the Great Rocks is a place rich in history, legends and naturalistic importance. A dense forest of holm oak and Mediterranean Maquis surrounds and protects the geological outcrops that make this a unique place. Pietra Cappa is the symbol of the valley but it is also the symbol the Aspromonte itself. Along the way stop at the Rocche di San Pietro, special rock formations excavated and used refuge by Basilian monks in medieval times.Duration: 6 hoursDinner and overnight stay at the farmhouse

    Escursione a Gallicianò

    Excursion to Gallicianò

    Set off on foot from the farm heading towards Gallicianò, an ancient Greek hamlet. After crossing the Amendolea river, ascend reaching the small village inhabited by a dozen souls who still speak Calabrian Greek. After lunch experience the rhythm of tambourine and organ by dancing the tarantella, traditional songs and dance played during celebrations which have been handed down from generation to generation. Duration: 5 hoursDinner and overnight stay in the farmhouse. 

    Escursione a Pentedattilo

    Excursion to Pentedattilo

    Perched on the cliffs of Monte Calvario between the rivers of Annà and S. Elia, Pentedattilo is one of the most picturesque and characteristic villages of southern Calabria. The unique morphology of the rock which is in the shape of a hand which seems to hold the houses in its palm, is the reason why it was abandoned, however, today it is its greatest strength. Pentedattilo has been brought back to life in the last few years, thanks to the efforts of a group of young people. The excursion that will lead us to discover this little corner of Calabrian history, is a circular trail and it reaches the Rocca di Santa Lena..

    Reggio Calabria e rientro

    Reggio Calabria and departure

    Guided tour of the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria, world renowned for being the home of the Riace Bronze Warriors, two large statues of Greek warriors which date back to the mid-5th  century B.C. and are considered to be among the most significant sculptural masterpieces of Greek art. Have a stroll along the most beautiful promenade in Italy. Departure.
